Already in the 16th century miners, precious stone collectors and lumberjacks were making journeys to the mountains. The first records of silver mining in the village of Sv. Peter date back to 1516, with the first map originating in 1569. When the mining of precious metals ceased, the mountain cottage business have began to develop and the mountains welcomed wanderers and herb pickers. It was in the 19th century, when the chalet owners at first provided only modest accommodation to visitors, later they modified their farmsteads for those interested in tourism. New access roads were built, services began to improve and tourism expanded. On 13 July 1793, Emperor Franz II permitted, by means of his Patent, the building of local church to replace the crumbling little chapel.
